Actual Paper Trademark Registration Certificate. How to get them.
Hello Reader,
Paper Trademark Registration Certificate How to get them.
How to get your own paper presentation copy of your Trademark Registration Certificate.
Transcript: Your trademark has been successfully registered, but where is the paper copy? Hi, JJ, trademark attorney for over 15 years and we've successfully registered over 7, 000 trademark applications. To answer that question, if you filed your application before May 24th, 2022, there's a good chance that you can receive a free paper copy of your trademark registration certificate.
However, after that date, unfortunately you will NOT be getting free paper copy of your trademark registration certificate. You can order one in the comments below. I'll have a link for you to go directly to the USPTO's website to order a copy, but it's $25 as of this recording. We've been in this business long enough that we've seen the first editions of these registration certificates.
They were beautiful. They were worth hanging. They were on thick folding card stock with a beautiful gold foil on in front. It was a great presentation copy, since then they've gone to thinner paper and now to no paper.
So unfortunately, if you're filed your application after that May 24th, 2022, you most likely will have to order your own paper copy for yourself and pay for it for yourself.

This is Week 8 and Chapter 8 of our 20-part Atomic Habits by James Clear weekly read through! Get the book and join us every week!
Transcript: Hello, welcome to week eight, chapter eight of Atomic Habits by James Clear. We're actually entering the second section, which is a second law called Make It Attractive. Chapter Eight is How to Make a Habit Irresistible. James Clear starts off with a story about a Dutch scientist, Niko Tinbergen, who was studying herring gulls.
And the adult herring gulls has a red dot on its beak. When it comes to feed the chicks, the chicks would instinctively peck on the red dots. When the adult herring gulls flew away, he came in with puppets with similar features, with a beak and the red dot on it. And he noticed that the chicks would keep pecking on the red dot.
When he actually made some of those red dots bigger, they actually got more excited. And when he had three red dots on the beaks, it just made them crazy pecking on the red parts of the beak. If you want to build a habit, make it attractive. The more attractive the opportunity is, the more habit inducing it will be.
He also mentions that habits are dopamine feedback loop. When dopamine rises, our motivation increases and we're more likely to do them. Finally, he says it's the anticipation of the reward, not the reward itself that gets us to take action. The higher the anticipation, the higher the dopamine spike.
That's chapter eight, week eight. We'll see you next week for chapter nine, week nine. Have a great day.

Suspensions are when your application is on hold. There are various reasons a trademark application can be suspended. However “likelihood of confusion” with prior application(s) filed and submission of foreign application are the most common reasons the USPTO may suspend an application. During a trademark suspension period, your lawyer will provide guidance on the next steps and whether it might be best to file an argument or pursue a coexistence agreement.
What are Disclaimers for Trademarks?
A disclaimer usually refers to a statement which indicates that you are not claiming exclusive rights to use the word(s) or a design element in your trademark application. A disclaimer allows for registration without creating a false impression of the registrant’s rights. A good example of this is disclaiming “café” if your services are for a café.
What is the Supplemental Registry?
If a trademark is not eligible for the Principal Registry, there is sometimes an option to register on the Supplemental Registry. In cases where the USPTO finds the trademark application is merely ornamental, merely descriptive, or primarily geographically descriptive, the USPTO may allow the application to be registered on the Supplemental Registry. However, over time, the mark may acquire distinctiveness and possibly become eligible for the Principal Registry.
What is the Date of First Use?
Two dates must be specified in a trademark application: Date of First Use Anywhere: The “anywhere” refers to use in the U.S. or elsewhere. This is the date the goods were first sold or transported, or the services were first rendered under the mark. The use must also have been bona fide and in the ordinary course of trade. Date of First Use in Commerce: This is the date when the goods were first sold or transported, or the services were first rendered under the mark in interstate or international commerce. The use of the mark must have been bona fide and in the ordinary course of trade.
What is the Renewal Timeframe for a Trademark?
The renewal timeframe for a trademark is between the 9th and 10th year anniversary of the trademark registration, and then in ten-year intervals. It is important to be aware that the USPTO also requires a registrant to provide an affidavit at the 5th and 6th years of ownership stating that the trademark is still being used in commerce. Failure to comply with the renewal timeframes or the affidavit requirements will result in the cancellation of the trademark registration.
