It's week 19, chapter 19 of James Clear's Atomic Habits. Here, the chapter is called the
Goldilocks Rule: How to Stay Motivated in Life and in Work. People reach their optimal stage when they're doing a task at the edge of being challenging. People need the challenge; they don't want to be bored. When they get too bored, then that's when they give up.
The greatest threat to success is not failure, but boredom. He mentioned this one elite coach he talked to about what he looks for in an athlete. Genetics, luck, talent, but one thing that he mentioned that he wasn't expecting to hear was at some point it really comes down to who could handle the boredom of doing training every day, doing the same lifts every day, handling that every day.
As habits become routine, they become less interesting and less satisfying. Anyone can work hard when they're motivated. It's the ability to keep on working when they're not motivated to do so. Professionals stick with schedules no matter how motivated they are. Amateurs allow life to get in their way.
That's chapter 19 of James Clear's Atomic Habits. See you next week for the last chapter, chapter 20.
